Atlantic District:
A Brief History of our Club
Canadian
Horse owners of the Atlantic District first met informally in 1991 in Orwell
Corners, PEI. With support from private individuals, a newsletter evolved and
over the next few years, interest in the Canadian Horse continued to grow. In
1995, the Canadian Horse Breeders-Atlantic District was formed, becoming a
recognized district of the national Canadian Horse Breeders’ Association.
Anyone with an interest in the Canadian Horse can become a
member of our Atlantic District, but Canadian horse ownership is contagious and
most people soon want one of their own, after spending some time around them!
Owners of part-bred Canadians are also welcome to join us. Once you come to know
the wonderful qualities of this “better half”, we will help you when your search
begins for a full Canadian! Some of our members offer various ages of Canadian
Horses for
sale, from weanlings to fully trained and experienced pleasure and/or
performance horses to brood mares.
Our membership is comprised of single
horse owners, those owning multiple horses, families with one horse serving as
the do-everything family horse, as well as Canadian Breeding Farms. (A list of
breeding farms will be uploaded to this site in the near future - stay tuned!)
Atlantic Canada has a wealth of bloodlines and versatile types of representative
mares and stallions;
the quality of the resultant Atlantic
Bred Progeny speaks for itself.
Members of our district
use their horses for work, competition and pleasure, both under saddle and in
harness. Geographically, we may be far apart, but we maintain close network of
support and information. Each year our annual
meeting becomes a reunion of friends. The meeting is hosted in a different
Atlantic province each year, and is never competitive but always informative and
combines the club business meetings with educational clinics.
In
2002, our club officially began an award program which we call the "Versatility
Awards Program". This system of awarding points was initiated to recognize
horses which perform various tasks for their owners. There is a one-time
registration fee, which registers the horse in the program for life, regardless
of ownership transfers. Canadian Horses in our region accumulate points for
performing a wide variety of activities, from demonstrations at fairs and
parades to giving lessons; showing and competitive events; even working in the
garden or yarding. The Canadian horse is a versatile, do-it-all type of horse:
our versatility program helps those versatile horses earn recognition for their
versatility. Additional information and downloadable copies of the Versatility
Award Program forms and info sheets are planned for publication to this site in
the near future: check back soon!
Canadian Horse Breeders-Atlantic
